Skincare Gamechanger: The Double Cleanse!!!

Have you ever shampooed your hair and that first cleanse just kind of feels “meh?” At this point, you know you’ll need to rinse and repeat. But sure enough, that second dose of shampoo, even with less product, lathers into a beautiful frothy foam of cleanliness! It’s after that second cleanse that you can feel a difference in each strand of your strong and healthy tresses, and now you can confidently say your hair is clean. Well, it’s time to give that same time and attention to your skin!

What is the Double Cleanse?

Well, it’s exactly how it sounds! 🙃 It’s a method of cleansing your face twice. This practice is highly revered by professionals in the aesthetics industry.  It is particularly recommended for your night time routine as cleansing your face at the end of the day is critical for the health and wellbeing of your skin. Think about all the elements your skin is exposed to throughout the day. The first cleanse is meant to break down and soften that top layer of oil, makeup, dirt, sunscreen residue, and other environmental pollution. You do NOT want to take that stuff to bed with you! The second cleanse is then able to rinse all of that grime away and allow you to actually clean the skin!#TheGoal!

The skin goes to work at night to repair and restore itself while you sleep. Double Cleansing helps to optimize the results of the wonderful ingredients of your serum, mask, and/or hydrator from your night routine. We always want to maximize absorption of your products and that will happen as long as your skin is clean enough!

Who Benefits the Most?

  • Oily Skin Types

  • Acne Prone Skin

  • Heavy Makeup Users

  • Heavy SPF (sunscreen) Users

  • Residents of Cities With Heavy Air Pollution and Smoke

Different Ways to Double Cleanse

1. Step 1: Oil-based cleanser — Step 2: Water-based cleanser

  • This is the original version of the double cleanse. Jojoba & Poppy Cleansing Oil is the absolute best for this method!

  • The goal of the oil-based cleanser is to breakdown and soften excess oil, dirt, makeup, etc. This is especially good for oily skin types. If you think of the fact that oil and water don’t mix, it should make sense that an oil cleanser is what will help breakdown oils on your skin.

  • Be sure to apply this to dry skin — remember, oil and water don’t mix! ;-)

  • Common Question: Can I use pure oils? ie. Coconut or Olive Oil

    • It’s not recommended! — Pure oils are very thick and don’t easily rinse off. This is no good for oily, sensitive, or acne prone skin because that layer/film of oil left on the surface of the skin can cause breakouts!

  • The 2nd cleanse is to be applied to damp skin. The water-based cleanser is now in a much better position to reach the actual skin and begin cleansing it!

2. Use the Same Cleanser Twice!!

  • This is a simple way to use what you have and get a thorough cleanse.

  • Caution: Must be sure the cleanser does not contain ingredients that will dry out the skin. — For example: Salicylic Acid, Retinoids, AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid, etc)

  • Reveal Your Truth - Green Tea Citrus Cleanser is PERFECT for this method!

  • With your gentle, water-based cleanser, remember to apply the first cleanse to dry skin. Best practice is to massage the product into the skin in circular motions for about 60 seconds! The second cleanse can be applied to damp skin.

3. Step 1: Oil or Water-based cleanser — Step 2: Water-based cleanser + Powder Exfoliant (gentle enough for daily use)

  • This is my personal favorite! - Gentle Oats & Rice Powder Exfoliant is exactly what you need for this method!

  • When adding a gentle, powder exfoliant to your cleanser, you now ensure the removal of dead skin cells while also cleaning new fresh skin underneath.

  • Caution: Your exfoliant MUST be gentle enough for daily use. Over-exfoliation or using abrasive scrubs can cause damage and irritation to the skin. The skin is a very intelligent organ and is able to shed dead cells on its own. Therefore, if you exfoliate too much, it can slow down cell turnover. [Cell Turnover - the natural process of shedding dead skin cells and replacing them with younger cells.]

  • Now that you’ve gently removed the top layer of dead cells, the remaining products in your routine (serum, mask, and/or hydrator) will be able to absorb much better into the skin and those ingredients can get to work while you sleep!
